Mud Lake fire contained

The Mud Lake fire, burning approximately two to four miles south of Garderville in Douglas County, was contained but not yet controlled as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

The fire had grown to 250 acres according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center but further spread was unlikely.

A red flag warning was in effect for high winds and low relative humidity over the fire area until 8:00 p.m.

The blaze was burning piñon and juniper trees on the west side of the Carson River, between the river and Mud Lake, an area where access is difficult.

About 95 firefighters worked to control the flames and were helped from above by a fire-fighting helicopter.

Four fire engines and four hand crews were working through the evening along with one water tender and a command staff of two.

No evacuations were ordered, and there were no road closures or structures threatened.

Agencies assisting in the fight included Douglas County, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Nevada Division of Forestry.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it was believed to be human-caused because there was no lightning in the area when it began.
