Murway places at Skills USA competition

Rebecca Murway of Carson City placed second in photography at the national Skills USA occupational competition in Kansas City, Mo., in late June. Murway is a student at Truckee Meadows Community College. About 4,800 high school and college students competed in the event.

Donations sought for Patrick and Erin Leahy Scholarship

For the past three years, the Patrick and Erin Leahy Scholarship has been presented to a Carson High School graduating senior to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.

Generous donations from the community have made this possible, and the Leahy family offers its thanks for the contributions. Donations are again being sought, and any amount is appreciated.

The senior is selected by the University of Nevada, Reno and the Carson High School scholarship committees. Checks can be made payable to the Patrick and Erin Leahy UNR Endowment Fund. Mad Hatter Tea Party set

A Mad Hatter Tea Party is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at the Governor's Mansion. All former Girl Scouts are urged to attend.

Nevada First Lady Dema Guinn will also be inducted as an honorary Girl Scout.

This is a chance for all former Girl Scouts to re-connect and share their favorite memories of being a Girl Scout (wearing your Brownie Beanie from 1968 is optional).

Some members have outlandish stories of Girl Scout Camp, and others remember how hard they worked to earn badges.

Salsas Dinner Gala set

Nevada Hispanic Services will host its first Salsas Dinner Gala on Sept. 16. The gala will celebrate its 15th year, its "quinceañera," for Nevada Hispanic Services of Carson City.

It is seeking nominees of Latino and Latina youth between the ages of 12-18 who have made significant contributions to the Hispanic community. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday. Please call Nevada Hispanic Services at 885-1055 for more information.

The Carson City office has started many innovative and successful programs that have been recognized both on a local level as well as nationally. Back to School Safety Fair in South Reno

Washoe Medical Center South Meadows will host a Back to School Safety Fair from 3-7 p.m. Thursday. Open to the public, the fair will feature displays and experts on nutrition, fun fitness ideas, immunization requirements, family healthcare, study aids and safety information. WMC South Meadows is at 10101 Double R Boulevard in south Reno.

Educational and health-focused exhibits, demonstrations and talks will highlight the fair.

Local law enforcement and emergency services agencies will offer fingerprinting, bicycle safety tips and helmet fittings and drug-prevention pointers.

Washoe Medical Center Therapy Center will provide school backpack fittings and posture assessments. A Washoe Medical Center nutritionist will present three short talks about tasty snacks, meals and treats that can help kids stay focused, alert and healthy during their school day.

Families can get information on health-care options such as urgent, emergency and family care and programs such as Washoe Medical Center's Women's Heart Program.

College to launch Career Focus program

Great Basin College will launch a new informational vehicle this semester with Career Focus magazine. The publication features articles on students, special services and courses of study at Great Basin College, as well as tips for academic success, financial aid and how to get the most out of college.

The publication should have been delivered to every household in northeastern Nevada this month.

Course schedules will be automatically mailed to students who have been enrolled at GBC in the last two years. The magazine has phone numbers, Web addresses and e-mail addresses for those who wish to contact the school or to receive a printed copy of the schedule.

The class schedule is also available online. Students can apply, schedule and enroll in classes on the Web site. The address is www.gbcnv.edu. Career Focus also contains a complete list of all of the class disciplines to be offered this fall.

Most fall courses begin Aug. 29. Students are invited to stop at the admissions office in Berg Hall on the Elko campus, or at the campus centers in Battle Mountain, Ely and Winnemucca.
