About 30 campers and their families gathered with their teachers and assistant principal Casey Gilles for a cookout which served as the finale to Bordewich Bray Elementary School's Camp Learn-a-Lot.
The school day ran from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. each day, and started off with English-language arts in the morning. After a short break filled with camp-like activities, such as making moose lips - snacks of peanut butter, marshmallows and apple slices made to looks like a moose's lips - students returned to class for math.
The camp had a lot of activities to make summer school fun for the children. Even the books they read over the summer had camping themes.
"It gives them something above and beyond, so they can say it was fun to go," Gilles said.
Summer school students will enter the third and fourth grades at Bordewich this fall. Next year, Gilles hopes to add science to the curriculum.
The school is also running its two-week jump start on kindergarten program for children who have had no prior experience in school. It helps them become accustomed to a desk, the classroom setting and items they will use, like scissors.
