A Yerington mother and father pleaded not guilty Monday to child-abuse charges in Lyon County District Court after their 2-year-old son sustained a brain injury in May.
Angela Morales-Rosales, 24, and Agustine Ruiz-Viramontes, 25, are being held in the Lyon County Jail on $30,000 bail each.
According to court documents, Morales-Rosales is charged with two counts of felony abuse, neglect or endangerment of a child causing substantial bodily harm for allegedly causing her 2-year-old son to suffer "an acute left subdural hematoma."
Ruiz-Viramontes, is charged with one count of felony abuse, neglect or endangerment of child causing substantial bodily harm for allowing the boy to "remain with Angela Morales-Ruiz when he knew or should have known that she was abusing the child."
Detective Rob Hall with the Lyon County Sheriff's Department said police were notified of the incident after the child was taken to the hospital May 29.
"The injury was inconsistent with the information the parents gave of a fall," he said. "It was way too severe."
The two were arrested June 20 on a warrant.
A subdural hematoma is bleeding on the surface of the brain. It is usually the result of a serious head injury. According to Nevada law governing child abuse, a hematoma can be the result of "shaken-baby syndrome."
A trial date has yet to be set.
