Lakeview area residents were surprised Monday afternoon to see a geyser of water erupting from the water line that supplies Virginia City.

But Carson Water Utility officials said the geyser was part of normal maintenance for the water system. Utility officials were flushing the water line between Hobart Reservoir and the line leading to Virginia City.

Storey County public works employees said they were told the line would be out of service "for a short time" while the pipe was flushed to clear it of any buildup. The town was not without water.

A Carson Utilities worker said that office has received several calls about the geyser of water.

"Apparently it's pretty spectacular," she said.

Virginia City is served by a 100-year-old system that draws water from Marlette Lake and Hobart Reservoir.
