Carson City

Spots still open for city ski program

The Carson City Recreation Division still has a limited number of openings for its Junior Ski and Snowboard program. Registrations will be held 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the Recreation Office in the Community Center, 851 E. William St. through Dec. 30.

This program is available to all children ages 9 (or in the fourth grade) to 18 years old. The program begins Jan, 22, weather permitting, and offers ski or snowboard instruction (all ability levels), six Sundays of fun on the slopes, transportation to and from the Community Center and Diamond Peak and special "reduced-rate" family ski days

This program is a real bargain at $225 per participant ($248 if nonresident); equipment is not included. For information call 887-2290, ext. 100.

Join the Silver Strings for lunch

Enjoy holiday music by the Silver Strings with your lunch from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St. The quartet will play Christmas carols, Hanukkah tunes, winter favorites, and more. Admission is free.

Member sought for the library board

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Library Board of Trustees. This committee oversees all library policy and budgets. They will meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 24, in the library auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., and beginning in February will meet the fourth Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center. Applicants must serve approximately six to eight hours a month. There is one opening. The term expires June 2006.

Applicants must be residents and registered voters of Carson City to the board for four years. Applications will be accepted until Friday.

Ride buses for free with food donation

Regional Transportation Commission public transit services - Pride, CitiLift, Citifare and Sierra Spirit - will accept nonperishable food donations as payment for fare.

Donations accepted on transit vehicles will be distributed to the Northern Nevada Food Bank and local branch of The Salvation Army. Call 348-0400.

Santa visiting for bookstore storytime

Westside Ink - Books, Art, Pie, 710 N. Curry St. will be having a Christmas Celebration starting with story time which will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with Kate Ventrice reading. Afterwards, Santa Claus will pay us a visit. Following Santa's visit, the kids can make a free ornament. You may sip some free hot cider while browsing unique gifts from some local artists and crafters. Call 885-9777.

Douglas County

Senior center party coming Saturday

The Douglas County Senior Center will be have its annual Christmas Party and Gift Exchange Saturday at the senior center. Social hour begins at 2 p.m. with a sit-down dinner at 3 p.m. Afterwards, the seniors will have a gift exchange. Attendees are requested to bring a gift ($5 limit) marked for either man or woman.

The following day, Sunday, is the Young At Heart sponsored Progressive Bingo game which is up to $650 and 59 numbers. Doors open at noon. Early-bird games will start at 1 p.m. Regular games are at 1:30 p.m. Come early to ensure a seat. Free coffee and snacks are available and other food items may be purchased at the snack bar.
