United Blood Services has issued an appeal for people with types AB and B negative blood to donate within the next week. Blood usage has been on the rise, and the local blood center has less than adequate supplies of blood products.

Also needed are plasma, cryo and platelets.

The blood centers are located at 256 East Winnie Lane in Carson City and 1125 Terminal Way in Reno. Both centers are open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

'A Chinese Character in Nevada' discussed

The Nevada State Railroad Museum is hosting a free program entitled "A Chinese Character in Nevada."

This presentation by Katie Pollock will cover the achievements and hardships of the Chinese American railroad workers who helped construct the Transcontinental Railroad.

This program will be held on at 7 p.m. Jan. 11, at the Railroad Museum, 2180 S. Carson St.

Stroke screenings offered at church

Screenings for risk of stroke will be offered by Life Line Screening on Jan. 9 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 4 Flowery Ave., Dayton. Appointments will begin at 10 a.m.

The screenings use ultrasound technology to scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs, Also offered is a bone density screening to asses the risk for osteoporosis.

Each screening requires 10 minutes or less to complete. The complete vascular screening package, including the stroke/carotid artery screen, abdominal aortic aneurysm and ankle brachial index cost $109.

The complete vascular package, including the osteoporosis screening costs $129.

Social club for singles meets weekly

Nevada Singles Social club meets every Friday at 7 p.m. for open socials at Mo and Sluggo's, 110 Telegraph St.

The socials are free to singles age 40-older to encourage membership in NSSC.
