Kids can learn about Nevada's aspen at after-school workshop
Aspen groves are a familiar, heartwarming sight in Northern Nevada. The trees, which have inspired artists, poets and photographers, also have some unique qualities, including the ability to clone themselves. The Nevada State Museum invites children in second through fifth grades to learn more about the region's "Amazing Aspens" during a one-hour after-school Natural History Workshop at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and again Feb. 24. Children will make their own cards or stationery using aspen leaf stamps.
Class size is limited to 15 participants. There are openings for Thursday's class. Preregistration is required by Feb. 22 for the Feb. 24 workshop. A $5 supply fee includes all materials. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
This series of after-school workshops is part of a new series of monthly programs called Explorations for the Young Naturalist. The topic for March is "Wild and Wonderful Wetlands." The workshops are designed to complement the changing exhibit "The Sagebrush Ocean: A Naturalist's Vision of the Great Basin."
The Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St., is open from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily. General admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for children under 18. Call 687-4810, ext. 237 to register.
