A memorial service for Ignacio "Kelly" Mendoza, 71, a Dayton resident for the past 31 years, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at FitzHenry's Funeral Home.
Following the service there will be military honors with rifle and cannon salute.
Mr. Mendoza died Feb. 11, 2005, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. He was born Nov. 15, 1933, in El Paso, Texas, to Francisco and Carlota Ramos Mendoza.
He married Denise Stolle.
He graduated from Long Beach Evening High School in 1962 and received an associate degree of applied science in law enforcement from Western Nevada Community College in 1990.
Before moving to Dayton, he lived in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Mr. Mendoza retired from the Carson City Sheriffs Office in 1991 after 15 years of service.
He also worked at the Nevada State Prison as a correctional officer from 1973-76.
He was a member of Shepherd of The Sierra Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir.
Mr.mendoza was a member of the Marine Corps League, Korean War Veterans Association and Toys For Tots program, and he enjoyed roller skating, bowling, fishing and camping.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was discharged in 1954 as a corporal.
He was preceded in death by son, Ricky.
Among his survivors are his wife of Dayton; daughter, Lori Mendoza of Reno; sisters Vera Esquivel and Virginia Mendoza, both of El Paso; brother, Ernest of Long Beach; granddaughter Zoey Mendoza and numerous other relatives.
Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory with inurnment at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
