Carson City

Chance to envision Carson is Thursday

Carson City planners will host an Envision Carson City community open house meeting from 4-7 p.m. Thursday in the City Hall Lobby at 201 N. Carson St. The open house is the latest in a series of public meetings that will be held during the Envision Carson City master plan update process. City planning staff members and representatives of the consulting team who are assisting the city in this effort will discuss the planning process and take comments from citizens.

Virginia City

New works performed on an old stage

Wing & A Prayer Dance Company will premiere new works by nationally renowned dance artists at 7 p.m. Friday at Piper's Opera House, 12 N. B St. in Virginia City. Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for students and seniors. Special reserve tickets are also available for $10. Reservations can be made by calling Piper's Opera House at 847-0433 or the dance company office at 323-0766.

In addition to the evening performance, a dance residency and two performances for Storey County School District are scheduled as part of the Comstock Arts Council Series. Students will learn about modern dance in a fun, informal setting. For information, call 323-0766.

Caregivers' workshop set for Saturday

A "Medication Management and Dementia" workshop for family caregivers is noon-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carson City Senior Citizen Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

The workshop features Dr. Steven Rubin and Kim Hathcock, MSN, APN. Suggested donation is $5; the workshop is presented by the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Nevada. To register, call 786-8061. Lunch will be provided.

Historical Society photo contest starts

The Douglas County Historical Society is the first museum in Nevada to get the Smithsonian Institution's Museums on Main Street exhibit "Between Fences."

The public will be invited to a reception when it opens the first week in October. To go along with this exhibit, the historical is having a photography contest of images of fences. The exhibits committee plans to display the entries while the "Between Fences" exhibit is in place at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville.

The exhibit will run October through December, and photos may be available for purchase.

Entry fees and categories are adults $10 and students (15 and under) free. Up to three color and/or black-and -white photos can be submitted per entrant. The contest will be juried, and cash prizes will be awarded to winners. The deadline for submitting photos to is 3 p.m., Sept. 1 at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 No. in Gardnerville.
