The raid of a Reno building project that resulted in multiple citations is the outgrowth of a cooperative effort between local, state and federal authorities.

And the agencies said last week they plan to further their proactive approach toward curbing unlicensed construction and other violations.

Representatives of the group known as the Construction Task Force conducted a surprise inspection of a remodeling project at the Hi Ho Motel and Ponderosa Lodge in the 1400 block of East 4th Street.

As a result, the Nevada Contractors License Board issued five citations for contracting without a license.

Representatives of the state's Occupational Health and Safety Administration said they identified about 18 violations at the building site.

The City of Reno issued a cease-anddesist order at the motel construction job and red-tagged the building permit the city had issued.

The U.S.

Department of Justice and the U.S.

Labor Department, meanwhile, said they're continuing their investigations of the work.

And the sixth agency involved in the raid the state's workers compensation enforcement unit said it informed insurance carriers of the construction work The interagency coordination is part of an increasingly proactive approach by the Nevada State Contractors Board to target unlicensed contractors.

Sonya Ruffin, a spokeswoman for the board, noted that state law requires that only licensed contractors can be hired for commercial projects.

Under the proactive enforcement philosophy undertaken by the State Contractors Board in recent months, inspectors randomly visit construction sites on weekends as well as weekdays.

At the same time, inspectors continue to respond to complaints about unlicensed contractors working in the state.
