Aspiring managers and executives in Douglas County will be spared the long commute to the University of Nevada, Reno, when the Carson City - Douglas County MBA Cohort Program begins offering classes on May 23.
The MBA classes will be offered spring and fall semesters on Monday and Wednesday nights at the Western Nevada Community College campus in Minden.
Summer sees a more intensive schedule.
It takes a year of night classes to earn a masters of business administration degree.
Seventeen courses are offered.
Students can register online at www.coba.unr.edu/ccdcmba.
Classes are taught by the same instructors who teach the program at the UNR campus.
This is to ensure the same quality as at the Reno campus, UNR officials say.
UNR is one of only 165 schools (out of 1,200 worldwide) that have full accreditation in accounting and business programs, Kambiz Raffiee, director of the MBA programs at UNR, said last week.
"One of our key considerations is to maintain the same level of accreditation as at the UNR campus, the highest level of accreditation in business programs," Raffiee said.
The new campus will be opened in response to demand by students whose major concern was the long commute to UNR to participate in the MBA program, said Raffiee.
Some Douglas County students had been commuting to Elko to take classes, said Katie Hall from the UNR marketing and communications office.
The program is funded, in part, by donations from General Electric-Bentley and Starbucks Coffee, both situated in Minden.
In 1991, UNR launched a rural MBA program in Elko.
It has graduated 100 students to date.
