Most everyone knows that Californians accounted for the lion's share of new residents in northern Nevada last year, but what state finished second? Try Arizona,with Texas right behind.
Illinois and New York also made significant contributions.
United Van Lines, which conducts an annual study of migration patterns, says that it hauled 555 inbound shipments to Washoe County last year.United handled 368 outbound shipments for people moving out of the county.
In Carson City, the company says it handled 58 inbound shipments and 26 outbound.
Among the shipments into the Reno area, the largest number by far 160 came from California.
Arizona was second with 36, Texas was third with 35, Illinois fourth with 27 and New York fifth with 26.
In all,United said it handled the moving chores for new Reno residents who came from 46 states and three Canadian provinces.
The story was much the same in Carson City,where shipments from California accounted for 31 percent of the total 18 out of 58.
But other move-in traffic to Carson City was divided almost evenly among 20 states and one Canadian province.
Oregon,with five shipments, and Arizona and Indiana with four each were the next highest after California.
What about the families who moved out? California, which accounted for about 19 percent of the outbound traffic, again was in first place.United said it handled 73 loads headed to the Golden State.
In second place was Arizona, where United hauled 38 loads from Reno.Washington, the destination of 30 loads,was in third place.
Oregon,with 24 outbound loads was in fourth place, and Texas ranked fifth at 22.
From Carson City, the 26 outbound loads handled by United were scattered among a dozen states.
California with five and Arizona with four were the most common destinations.
Statewide,United said that inbound shipments accounted for nearly 63 percent of its business in Nevada, while outbound shipments accounted for 37 percent.
The company handled 5,756 moves in Nevada during 2004.
Nevada ranked second behind only Oregon in its percentage of inbound as opposed to outbound traffic.
