Second lake drowning victim from Reno

SILVER SPRINGS - A second drowning victim at Lake Lahontan has been identified as a Reno man.

Dental records confirmed a body found Friday was Jonathan Z. Luttrell, 21, said Detective Rob Hall with the Lyon County Sheriff's Department.

Luttrell is believed to have drowned May 30 near Beach 7.

According to Hall, Luttrell was visiting a female friend in Silver Springs over Memorial Day weekend.

The last time the woman saw Luttrell was when they were together at a Silver Springs casino on May 29, Hall said.

About 5:30 the following morning, campers heard a man yelling for help some 250 feet from shore. When they reached the area by boat, the man had disappeared. The sighting happened two days after a Virginia City man was believed drowned near Beach 6.

The body of Timothy Easley, 21, was recovered June 6.

Hall said stolen watercraft was found adjacent to where witnesses said the man was seen.

"At some point (Luttrell) had parted (his friend's) company and ended up out at the lake. We believe he possibly had attempted to take a couple of Sea-Doos out for a joy ride," Hall said. "It looks like they ran out of gas and he tried to swim back to shore and went under."

The female friend called police when she didn't hear from Luttrell, but Hall said Luttrell's mother, who lives in Reno, said "it wasn't uncommon for him to go off and do his own thing.

"It wasn't a big red flag that they hadn't heard from him."
