Three truckloads of rainbows planted in East Carson River

BISHOP, CALIF. AREA: Gary Olson of the Bishop Creek Resorts (760) 873-4484:

Intake No. 2: Was like a zoo on Saturday morning. Many anglers did very well with rainbow Power Bait and nightcrawlers. A 3-pound, 12-ounce rainbow on a Panther Martin lure.

North Lake: The road is finally open. Power Bait has been very good with Salmon eggs a close second.

South Lake: The fishing has been great with threaded nightcrawlers trolled behind a boat bringing in lot of limits. The standby red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure has been awesome. A 5-pound, 6-ounce rainbow on nightcrawlers.

Bishop Creek: Salmon eggs and worms have been best. One group of fishermen had a stringer that weighed 12-pounds, 9-ounces, and the fish were already cleaned. They used Power Bait after dark.

Weir Pond: Lots of flies are beginning to work pretty good with green Mosquito or Royal Coachman at the top of the list.

BLUE LAKES, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) reported that the road is still closed but they hope to have it open for the Fourth of July. It is open to Charity Valley.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707): "They are really starting to "bang" them. It is pretty darn good for boats stillfishing with inflated nightcrawlers or trolling real slow. Most of the fish are in the 2-pound range, but some are up to 4 pounds."

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River: Brad Davis at the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229) reported that the river is still running high. The normal average flow is about 700-800 CFS and it is currently flowing at 1,380 CFS (Monday).

Calif DF&G planted two truckloads of planters on Thursday and Alpine County planted one truckload on Friday.

They stocked Wolf Creek, Silver Creek and the Carson River, so they are all full of fish.

We've had lots of limits reported, with trout all the way up to 4 pounds. Black Panther/Martin and Roostertail lures are hot as are Salmon eggs and nightcrawlers. Kids and everyone are catching fish, right now.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported that it is running at 200 CFS, dropping and clearing up. A 5-pound rainbow was taken on yellow Power Bait by Skylar Peterson, 13, of Carson City. Two other anglers caught 9 trout on Saturday and 8 on Sunday.

CATNIP RESERVOIR, NEV: The 2005 season will open on Sept. 1.

FEATHER RIVER AT ORVILLE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported: Water is at 5,000 CFS. Catching nice King Salmon. Some limits. Using gold Flatfish lures and bouncing roe.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): A limit of rainbows (weighing a total of 8 pounds) was caught Saturday on worms at the dam. Generally, fishing is very good, off the bank and trolling.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF: Opens on the Friday before Labor Day each year (Sept. 2, 2005).

HOBART RESERVOIR, NEV: All access by way of Ash Canyon is restricted due to logging work on-going in that area.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that there have been some pretty good limits taken. Bob Bellvomini of Minden caught a 5.25 pound rainbow on a black Woolly Bugger fly.

KINNEY RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that the ice is almost off the lake, but no fishing reports. Still a lot of snow at Ebbetts Pass.

KIRMAN (AKA CARMEN) LAKE, CALIF: Rick Giser reported that he has not had a report for over a week.

Note: This lake is about a 2 mile hike from the Sonora Pass Highway (S. R. 108).

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Shirley at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750) reported: "Missy (Swain) went down to the Giants game and she will be sitting behind home plate tonight (Monday). The fishing at Beach No. 3 has been very good, they are catching lots of Walleye. The water is still coming up and we are losing a lot of camp sites. It is sure going to put a damper on things for the Fourth of July."

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Doug Ouellette of the Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks at 358-6113: Monument Rocks and Warrior Point are where they are finding the fish right now. The Cutts are in the shallows, chasing the Tui Chubs. Remember that the lake closes to trout fishing at the end of the month.

RED LAKE CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that Chris and Katie Christian of Gardnerville caught a 4.5 pound Cutthroat on a nightcrawler.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) reported:

Redding to Anderson: Water flows at 10,500 CFS.

Fly fishing for rainbow trout is fantastic.

Catching and releasing many nice rainbows, 2-6 pounds.

Using No. 14 or No. 16 Pheasant tail flies.

Micro May Fly patterns were working well.

Great bug hatch now.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported catching nice King Salmon (2-5 pounds) and large rainbows. Fishing is good. 80-100 feet deep, trolling with Shad pattern lures. Fishing the Digger Bay area.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "The fishing has been very good. We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We're catching lots of nice fish but nothing super big.

I am trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "Agate Bay, Cal Neva Point and Dollar Point have been good to excellent, early in the morning.

We are trolling for Macks with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at depths of 130-300 feet, along the edges of the drop-offs.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good to very good.

Best places have been Ski Run Mound and Camp Richardson.

We are trolling 150-250 feet deep with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows."

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good to very good.

We are trolling silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at a depth of 150-250 feet.

Working the Cave Rock Shelf for Macks. Most are 1-4 pounds."

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported, "Beautiful weather this morning (Monday). They are catching a few fish but not pulling in limits. They are fishing the deep water and trolling about 20 feet deep. The lake is starting drop, it was over it's max limit and is now about two feet down from the top of the jetties. Monday-Friday is the best time to come out fishing, there aren't any water-skiers or jet skis, then."

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071) (Ask for the boat house) reported: A 5-pound rainbow on a Bikini Needlefish lure, a 4.5 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler and a 3-pound, 3-ounce rainbow on a nightcrawler. Rainbow Power Bait also working well for stringers of pan-sized rainbows.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort reported, "This past week has been fraught with heavy winds and very cool temperatures both during the day and night. Fishing was terrific during the first two days of the wind, if you could brave the elements. Lots of big fish were taken out of Big Virginia Lake. Some great looking DFG Brooders, and some were as nice as Alpers fish. Lots of nightcrawlers, lures, and black woolly buggers have been getting the best tugs for the week."

WALKER LAKE, NEV: Gene Phelps of Carson City reported, "Not much action. One of our guys caught one fish, using a Mepps spinner. The rest of us got skunked. Water is noticeably higher than it was two weeks ago. Not another fishermen in sight, anywhere."

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Rick Giser reported:

East Walker: The flow today (Tuesday) is 458 and it is very fishable. The fish are a little easier to land, now that the river is dropping. The fly fishermen are doing much better than the spincasters.

West Walker: It went up again from the melting snow. It is flowing at 1,450 CFS today (Tuesday). If you fish it, you are either foolish or wasting your time.

Little Walker: Still high and muddy.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472 said, "The weather has been beautiful for the last three days. The fishing is excellent. They are catching trout in the 3-4 pound class with red/white spoons, both from boats and from shore. On the Fourth, we are going to have barbecued chicken, ribs and hot dogs with potato salad, plus horse shoes and skeet shooting."
