Mosquitoes at Blue Lakes, Calif. reported to be 'Bad, Bad, Bad'

BLUE LAKES, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) reported, "The road is now open, it opened on Saturday, but some of campsites at the campgrounds are still not available due to remaining snow drifts.

Lots of campers over the weekend. There were people everywhere.

The mosquitoes are Bad, Bad, Bad in that area. I completely sold out of Repellent on Saturday.

A couple of float tubers fished for 4 hours with no bites on Lower Blue. They said that there were not a lot of fish caught at either Lower or Upper Blue."

BOULDER RESERVOIR, NEV: Malcolm ("Mac") Wilson of Carson City reported that two weeks ago, he and his son caught their limits of rainbow trout, up to 15 inches, with gold Super Duper lures.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Rick Giser of Ken's Sporting Goods Store (760-932-7707): "It is actually doing very well. We had reports of lots of nice rainbows. The best fishing was trolling with Rapala lures. The best fish was a 6-pound brown. They are trolling a little deep to get under the algae, and are using lures like a No. 9 Countdown Rapala lure."

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported Bill Hall of Reno caught a 7-pound rainbow, while fishing with a nightcrawler from his float tube.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:

East Carson River:

Brad Davis at the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): "The holiday weekend was not that crazy. There were a lot of people, the river is still up and they were catching some fish. Most of the fish were caught on Salmon eggs. We weighed several 4 and 5 pound rainbows.

The biggest fish was an 8-pound, 2-ounce rainbow caught by Wyatt Oakes of Vacaville, Calif. It weighed 8-pounds, 2-ounces and was caught on Salmon eggs by the first highway bridge south of the Monitor Pass Junction.

Dave Kirby reported that two anglers hiked down to the "Trophy Section" from the airport. They said the water was up a little and murky. They caught 1 small brown and 2 rainbows, with flies drifted under the surface of the water.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported that it is down and clear. Lots of fish caught over the weekend, He completely sold out of one-day fishing licenses by 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Markleeville Creek: Brad Davis reported the fishing was "hot" on Salmon eggs for DF&G planters.

Silver Creek: Dave Kirby reported Cari Adamson of Gardnerville caught a 5-pound rainbow on a cinnamon colored Roostertail lure on July 2.

Wolf Creek: Dave Kirby reported Eric Jardine, 9-years-old, of Gardnerville caught a 1-pound rainbow on Salmon eggs Sunday.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF: Shore fishing, trolling and fly fishing are all rated as slow.

FEATHER RIVER AT ORVILLE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported: Water is at 2,200 CFS. Catching a few nice King Salmon. Low water flows have made fishing tougher. Water should be on the rise after the 4th. Using gold Flatfish lures and bouncing roe.

FT. CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS, NEV: Elmer Bull of NDOW reported that a fishermen told him that he had caught and released about 30 Channel Catfish (8-14 inches), last Thursday, on worms and chicken liver.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): A 2-pound rainbow was caught on worms. Generally, worms and Power Bait are best bait. Use marshmallows to float the bait. Fly fish around the dam.

Green Creek, Calif: Rick Giser reported lots of mosquitoes in that area. They are fierce.

HINKSON SLOUGH, NEV: Elmer Bull reported that last Friday, a fisherman caught several nice trout, 2 bass and 10 Blue Gill (5-6 inches) with a German brown-colored Rapala lure.

KIRMAN (AKA CARMEN) LAKE, CALIF: Rick Giser reported that fishing is fair.

Most guys are getting 2-3 fish, but they are nice Brookies, averaging about 17 inches.

Note: This lake is about a 2 mile hike from the Sonora Pass Highway (S. R. 108).

MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, NEV: Elmer Bull reported a fisherman was catching 15-16 inch bass at Bass Pond with black plastic worms. Lots of weeds in the water.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: Closed to Lahontan cutthroat trout fishing until Sept. 1.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448) reported:

Redding to Anderson: Water flows at 13,000 CFS, perfect for drifting.

Fly fishing for rainbow trout is fantastic.

Catching and releasing many nice rainbows, 2-6 pounds.

Using No. 14 or No. 16 Pheasant tail flies.

Micro May Fly patterns were working well.

Spin fishing is good with Glo Bugs and Crickets for trout and Shad.

Great bug hatch now.

Opening day of the King Salmon fishing season will be July 16 from Red Bluff and below.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported catching nice King Salmon (2-6 pounds) and large rainbows. Fishing is excellent. 80-100 feet deep, trolling with Shad pattern lures. Fishing the Digger Bay area. Fishing is heating up on the lake.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462): "The fishing has been good on every trip. We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning and tagging and releasing the smaller ones.

We're catching lots of nice fish but nothing super big.

I am trolling the deep-water area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552): "Agate Bay, Cal Neva Point and Dollar Point have been good to excellent, early in the morning.

We are trolling for Macks with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at depths of 130-300 feet, along the edges of the drop-offs.

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good to very good.

Best places have been Ski Run Mound and Camp Richardson.

We are trolling 150-250 feet deep with silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows."

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore: Gene St. Denis: "Fishing has been good to very good.

We are trolling silver Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows at a depth of 150-250 feet.

Working the Cave Rock Shelf for Macks. Most are 1-4 pounds."

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields at the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported, "Not much fishing going on due to all of the jet skis, water skiers, inner tubes, etc. The few trollers were not picking up any fish. I think that they have gone deeper to get away from all of the commotion. They were catching a few fish from shore with Power Bait on the Southwest end."

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF: Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort reported, "This has been the most incredible week for weather and fishing. Temperatures have been running in the low 70's most of the week, and no wind.

Little Virginia saw stocking of 900+ pounds of trout, including a couple dozen brood stock from Fish and Game.

Tim Alpers also made a deposit of some really nice fish and the catching has been slightly less than sensational.

Lures, nightcrawlers, and Power Worms has been the main event on Little V.

Lures and fly and bubble on Big Virginia.

Trumbull has also seen some action on salmon eggs and marshmallows."

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF: Rick Giser reported:

East Walker: The flow is 660 CFS. The fly fishermen are doing best. They are using Midges and Caddis flies or drifting Streamers on the bottom.

West Walker: It is flowing at about 1,500 CFS. It is high and fast. They are catching a few fish, here and there.

Little Walker: Still high and fast.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472 said, "The fishing has been average for up here, which would be terrific anywhere else. We probably had some 400-500 people camped at the reservoir for the holiday weekend. The weather has been beautiful. We had a fisherman from Spring Creek catch a 25.8 pound Channel catfish on nightcrawlers and shrimp."

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Doug Busey and Steve Lightfoot of Douglas County reported that they did very good Catfishing from shore. Busey caught a 15-pound, 4-ounce Channel Catfish with shrimp and worms, and Lightfoot caught a 9.5 pound Channel Catfish with Power Bait.
