Sunday Column: Science fair winners chosen

The St. Teresa Science Fair winners have been chosen. They will compete in the regional science fair in Reno on March 17.

In grades kindergarten through third, Luke Doyle took first place for his project "Hover," Kaitlin Lucky won second place for "Circuits" and Jessica Aymami won third for "Mechanics of a Racehorse."

In grades fourth through sixth, Jonathan Loomis and Mitchell Miles won first place for "Acidity and/or Alkalinity of CC Water," Brendan Boyle won second for "Temperature Changes around the House" and Patrick Beauchamp won third for "How a Compass Works."

In grades seventh and eighth, Gabriela Doyle won first place for "Bud Light?" Tyler Smith won second place for "How Diets Effect Heart Rate" and Lauren Ely and Sam Hoch won third for "Emotion Devotion to Color."

Coldwell Banker Best Sellers gave $23,205 in donations raised from the Boot Scootin' BBQ held in October 2004 to Carson City and Dayton community organizations such as Carson Tahoe Hospital Cancer Center, Dayton and Carson Meals on Wheels for Seniors, Dayton and Carson high schools' safe grad nights, Advocates to End Domestic Violence, the Waterfall fire project, the Capital City Humane Society, Silver Springs Spay and Neuter Project and Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Also honored were Nevada Appeal Publisher John DiMambro and advertising representative Diane Kneeland.

Three Carson Sertoma Club members were recognized at an awards dinner recently. They include: Bill Knight, who received the Service to Mankind award; Rick Ghiglieri, who received the Sertoman of the Year award; and Frank Rich, who was recognized as Sertoman of the Years.

Something sweet is headed for 130 Nevada soldiers serving in Iraq. Carson City's Brownie Troop 399 is sending nearly 500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to show their appreciation for the troops.

The 13 Brownies also wrote personal letters.

The father of troop member Rebecca Matley, 9, was deployed to Iraq in October.

"Because Girl Scout cookies are so Americana, I think it will mean a lot to (the soldiers) that these girls have done this for them," said Rebecca's mother, Stephanie Matley.
