Rudyard Kipling wrote in many modes - as a journalist, a poet, a novelist and as author of "The Jungle Book" for children. "The Jungle Book" is the tale of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the jungles of India. The book was first published in 1893, and has remained a fixture in children's literature ever since.
It also lives on in the form of a play and a film, the 1967 Disney version. Carson Performing Arts at Carson High School presents the play as this year's Fairytale Theatre presentation.
The play is adapted from the Mowgli stories by Vera Morris.
First-time director Sam Sifuentes, a senior at Carson High School, is directing "The Jungle Book" as her senior project. She reports she has had a "wonderful time" directing.
"It's a somewhat dramatic piece, and I knew it might be hard to keep the kids' attention, but we have made it a funny and upbeat show that is colorful, fast moving, and fun for all ages," Sifuentes said.
The cast helped in its own costume designs and mask adaptations. Audiences will see all their favorite "Jungle Book" characters and animals dancing and bringing the jungle alive.
The play opens to the general public Friday at 7:30 p.m. and continues Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. There will also be special showings for schools, preschools and day care centers today and Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tickets for the daytime shows are $2 for pre-booked groups.
