Register for summer classes at WNCC

Internet registration for summer classes at Western Nevada Community College begins Monday. Summer classes start June 13 and continue through Aug. 5. For available classes and to register, go to www.wncc.edu on the Internet.

Summer session classes provide students the opportunity to complete required or prerequisite academic courses at WNCC and other colleges and universities. Classes are available in art, business, education, English, mathematics, humanities, nursing and science.

More than 120 academic credit classes and non-credit community education classes, and 13 online courses, are offered at the Carson, Douglas and Fallon campuses and in Smith Valley and Yerington. Buy ticket now to win Winnemucca maquette

The Nevada Women's History Project is selling raffle tickets for a drawing to win a maquette of the Sarah Winnemucca statue.

The maquette is an 18-inch version of the statue recently installed in the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and is designed by the statue sculptor, Benjamin Victor. The winning ticket will be drawn April 6 when the second full-size statue will be installed in the Capitol.

Raffle tickets are $50 each and tax deductible. The funds will be used to pay for the maquette and for state projects of the Nevada Women's History Project. Tickets are available by calling (775)267-3410.

Eighteen-inch maquettes are available for purchase from the Nevada Women's Fund for $5,500.

Oscar-winning short films show at WNCC

Tahoe/Reno International Film Festival and the Western Nevada Community College Lone Mountain Writers are showing eight nominated and winning Oscar shorts at 7:30 p.m. April 8, in Marlette Hall at WNCC. Both live-action and animated international films will be shown. They are not rated, but advised for adults.

Paramount Studios Film Executive and Screenwriter Dan Stroncak will host the 100 minutes of cinematic excitement. Filmgoers are welcome to meet with Stroncak, Tahoe/Reno staff and fellow film enthusiasts after the screenings.

The cost is $15 and seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased from the film festival Web site, www.t-riff.org, or at the door. To assure a seat, tickets need to be purchased in advance. Call for information 298-0018.

This year's offerings are: "Two Cars, One Night," a New Zealand film; "Wasp," a United Kingdom film; "Little Terrorist," an Indian film; "7:35 in the Morning," a Spanish film; "Birthday Boy," an Australian film; "Ryan," a Canadian film; "Gopher Broke," an American film; and "Rex Steele," an American film.

Genoa Park opens for season this Saturday

Nevada State Parks announces an early opening April 2, of the museum at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. Hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. every day through mid-October.
