Carson City

State Museum offers daily behind-the-scenes tours all week

The Nevada State Museum celebrates Archaeological Awareness and Historic Preservation Week by hosting daily behind-the-scenes tours of its collections through Friday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The guided tours will highlight the museum's collection of Dat-So-La-Lee baskets and artifacts from the former Carson City Mint.

Advance reservations are required due to limited space. Regular museum admission applies. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for age 17 and under. Call (775) 687-4810, ext. 237, to arrange a tour.

The museum is at 600 N. Carson St.

Classical guitarist opens monthlong library music series

Carson City Library will present a series of musical programs Tuesday, May 17, 24, and 31. Each free performance will begin at 7 p.m.

Tuesday will open the series with a performance by classical guitarist Peter Fletcher. On May 17, Carson City's string quartet Silver Strings will take to the library's auditorium stage. Folk singer Adam Miller will bring his autoharp on May 24. The series will conclude on the final Tuesday of the month with the popular Celtic group Wild Sage on May 31.

Award-winning classical guitarist Fletcher will play music from the Renaissance through the 20th century, from Bach to flamenco to spirituals.

John C. Falstaff of Creative Living said, "Fletcher's playing exhibits an impressive command of the considerable dynamic range which is possible with just one guitar ..."

Library Oktoberfest planning begins

The Carson City Library Foundation will hold a monthly Oktoberfest committee meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the library.

State Historic Preservation Officer hosts program Railroad Museum

State Historic Preservation Officer Ron James will speak on current issues related to historic preservation in Nevada, including several issues affecting railroad resources, during a free program at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

James will discuss proposed National Register nominations, the opening of the railroad tunnel in Virginia City and the Commission for Cultural Affairs' grants program. He will also will show new images of historic sites in Nevada and demonstrate how railroad history may be researched using the Nevada Online Census.

Ex-lawmaker addresses GOP women at Two Guys

The Sierra Nevada Republican Women will meet Wednesday at Two Guys from Italy in Gardnerville for a noon luncheon.
