June Family to Family workshops

Family to Family Connection provides both infant and toddler workshops for parents and their children. Infant workshops are for parents with babies birth to one year. All workshops are free and held from 10-11:30 a.m.

Toddler Time meets every Wednesday the program recognizes play as the core element of infant toddler curriculum and is based on developmentally appropriate practice for young children.

Two sessions are held every Wednesday, the one-year-old group meets from 9:30-10:30 a.m., the two-year-old group meets from 11 a.m.- noon. Pre-registration is required and parents must commit to a four-week session. The June session begins Wed., June 1. We are at 212 East Winnie Lane in the Ron Wood Family Center. Local student participate in 'Urban Plunge'

Tamaria Eistenstragger, from Carson City, along with approximately 60 other students from the University of Mobile, in Alabama, loaded into a van and hit the road to spend the weekend volunteering time and energy to serve cities across the southeast.

Urban Plunge is UM's semiannual 48-hour inner-city mission experience which took place last month. Each team, consisting of approximately 10 members, targeted a different location. Students helped paint, wash windows, minister to the needy and helped build new homes.

This year students targeted seven cities: Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery, Ala.; Atlanta; Baton Rouge, La., New Orleans and Nashville. Eistentragger and her group of six UM students traveled to Baton Rouge.

They worked with the Healing Place Church, ministering to people at traffic lights as they waited at busy intersections. The next day, they spent time at the Glory House, a downtown ministry for children. They ministered to students living on campus at LSU and attended worship services at Woodlawn Baptist Church. Over the past six years approximately 1,000 students have collectively given 40,000 hours of service to this urban ministry.

MDA establishes fellowship

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has created a competitive postdoctoral fellowship to honor former MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Mattie Stepanek, who died last June from complications associated with his rare neuromuscular disease, mitochondrial myopathy.

The Mattie Stepanek Postdoctoral Research Fellowship provides a salary stipend of $60,000 per year for two years to a postdoctoral fellow specializing in MM research. Application forms are available at www.mdausa.org/research/rrga-form.html.

The fellowship is designed to draw new scientists into MDA's extensive worldwide research program and to expand its efforts to defeat mitochondrial myopathy. MDA currently funds nearly 400 research teams worldwide seeking cures and treatments for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.

Band camp begins July 25

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department and Vivo Band Instrument Repair will sponsor a Band Camp from July 25-29 at the Carson City Community Center.

The camp is for students who have at least one year experience playing an instrument and are entering sixth through eighth grade in the fall.

The students will participate in concert band, jazz band, small ensembles, group lessons and a theory class. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-noon every day and begins on July 25. The camp culminates with a concert at noon July 29.

The cost is $75 if students register before June 30 and $85 if registration is after July 1.
