Women in Lyon County who are the main support of their family and still trying to improve their lives can get some recognition with the Women's Opportunity Award from the Soroptimists Club.

They can also get a bit of cash; the award will put $500 in the winner's hands.

The Dayton Soroptimists Club is accepting applications for the award, which goes to women who are the primary support of their households. But it's not just for single women, according to Jannette Hoffert, Central Lyon County Parks and Recreation executive director and club member

"They don't have to be anything, they just have to be the main support of their family," she said. "They can be married."

They also must be attending, or accepted to, a course to improve vocational skills training or an undergraduate program, must have a financial need and must be motivated to achieve their goals.

They must also reside in a Soroptimist International member country.

This is the first time the Dayton club has offered the award.

The winner of this award will be eligible for the Soroptimists' region award of $5,000, and the 28 first-place recipients become eligible to win one of three $10,000 finalist awards.

The purpose of the award is to assist women in overcoming personal difficulties to better their lives through education and skills training. The cash award may be used to offset any cost associated with their education, including books, child care and transportation.
