Traffic was stopped for more than 30 minutes Wednesday afternoon following a one- car roll-over accident on Highway 395 approximately one mile north of the Bellevue interchange.
The driver of the vehicle, Wallace L. Tibbitts Jr., 45, of Reno, was taken by Care Flight helicopter to Washoe Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Chuck Allen.
The accident occurred just after 3:30 p.m. when the northbound vehicle veered into the median, causing the driver to overcorrect and roll the vehicle, which came to stop in the right lane of the highway. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident, Allen said.
Tibbitts was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
"The Department of Public Safety would like to reiterate how important seat belts are and how they often reduce injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents.
"During this busy holiday weekend with large volumes of traffic on our highways, take the extra two seconds to buckle up. It might save your life," said Allen.
Traffic was backed up for approximately two miles while officers worked on the accident, before reopening the northbound lanes at approximately 4:15 p.m.
