Readers' holiday memories sought

The Nevada Appeal wants you to write about your favorite holiday memory and send it in by Dec. 9.

For the ninth year, we are asking readers to write about that special gift, unexpected visit, memorable act of kindness or holiday season spent far from home - the one-of-a-kind moments that are both personal and universal.

E-mail them to editor@nevadaappeal.com with "Holiday Memory" in the subject name, or fax to 887-2430. They may also be sent via the U.S. postal service to "Holiday Memory," Nevada Appeal, 580 Mallory Way, Carson City, NV 89701; or dropped off.

We will publish as many of the stories as we can in the days before Christmas. Stories should be true, typed if possible, and no longer than 500 words.

Include your name, hometown, phone number, a one-sentence biography and a photograph of yourself or one that illustrates the memory.

Entertainment books fund horse rescue program

Save money and help feed rescued horses awaiting adoption in the Lucky Horse Rescue program by purchasing the 2006 Entertainment Book from the Fund-a-Flake rescued-horse feeding program.

The 2006 Entertainment Books offer two-for-one and discounts at many restaurants, businesses, hotels, resorts, sporting and entertainment events across Northern Nevada including Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Lake Tahoe. The books cost $25.

All proceeds benefit the Fund-a-Flake rescued horse feeding program to buy hay-grass mix to feed rescued horses awaiting adoption in the Least Resistance Training Concepts - Lucky Horse Rescue program.

Fund-a-Flake's organizers say a bale of hay will break (flake) into pieces, and it takes two to four flakes a day to feed one horse.

Enlisted sea service vets sought

The Fleet Reserve Association and the Ladies Auxiliary are extending their membership to all enlisted sea service veterans and their ladies to ensure a unified voice and strong representation for all enlisted sea service personnel.

The association works daily to ensure members of Congress are aware of the unique challenges of military service and gives voice to shipmate's concerns about pay, health care, survivor benefits, etc.

Branch 137 meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at Veterans Hall, corner of Second and Curry streets.

Capitol tree lighting set for Thursday

Silver & Snowflakes Holiday Tree Lighting will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday. Festivities begin on the Capitol grounds. The state and city trees will be lit, Santa will give out candy canes, and the 250 voices of the Carson City Fifth-Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble will sing, accompanied by the Carson Middle School Red Hot Bell Peppers handbell choir. Santa arrives in a decorated 1926 Model T, driven by Beau the dog.

Sixteen creative willow "reindeer" made this week by local school children and Boy Scouts, under the guidance of "Willow" Bill, will be placed on the Capitol lawn and lit with white lights.

The ceremony is coordinated by the Arlington Group for the Office of the Governor and Carson City Redevelopment. Call 887-1294.

Eagles and Ag Group announces special locals day

A Locals Day has been added to the 2006 Eagles and Agriculture Weekend to ensure more area residents have a chance to experience the interaction between wildlife and agriculture that takes place each February in Carson Valley. In addition to the always sold-out tours and activities taking place Feb. 24-26, a "Locals Day" is 7:30-10:30 a.m. Feb. 22.

Birds of prey that come to scenic Carson Valley to feed on the rodents and nutrient-rich afterbirth during the winter calving season include eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and other species.

Locals will take a private group tour of area ranches to observe birds of prey from vantage points not available to the general public. The tour is $25, and includes motor coach transportation along with expert guides.

Reservations for the fourth annual event are also available. Space is limited, participants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
