Supervisors to vote on land purchase for Stewart Street extension

City supervisors will vote Thursday on the first in a series of land purchases still needed to extend Stewart Street north.

The goal is to connect Stewart to a widened Roop Street at Lone Mountain Cemetery, creating another north-south arterial bypassing downtown.

City Manager Linda Ritter said there are "many many" parcels the city needs to buy in order to complete the road but that having Stewart Street as an arterial is vital to the city.

Open Space Manager Juan Guzman said the Moody Street property is one of four parcels the city must buy outright for the North Stewart Street extension.

After that, he said, they need pieces of a number of other parcels.

"The remainder are partial purchases - 10 feet here, 50 feet there." He said one of the larger pieces needed for the road project is now part of the Pioneer High School property.

"Stewart Street will provide relief that we need even when the bypass is constructed," said Guzman. "We need our surface streets to work more efficiently."

Ritter said North Stewart Street is also important to plans which would convert Carson Street from a thoroughfare into a two-lane street through downtown. To do that, she said the bypass and other north-south streets must take as much traffic as possible off of Carson Street.

The property at 1402 N. Moody St. is the first of those purchases because its owner died recently.

The city was successful bidder at the probate auction and, with board approval, will pay $195,000 for the parcel.

"We hope that in the end we saved the city money," said Guzman.
