Kruzers hold yard sale to benefit teens

Karson Kruzers will hold a yard sale beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at 4340 Highway 50 E. Proceeds benefit Kruzin' for Kids, a Christmas event for teens in Carson City.

Nevada Army Guard hosting open house

The Nevada Army National Guard will host an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Office of the Adjutant General, 2460 Fairview Drive.

The open house is free and the public welcome, especially veterans and civilians interested in the military.

Tribe seeks applicants for Head Start Program

Washoe Tribe Head Start Program is accepting applications for its Stewart Head Start Program in Carson City and the Dresslerville Head Start Program in Gardnerville for the 2005-06 school year. Enrollment is open to all low-income children ages 3-5 years, including those with disabilities and special needs.

Head Start is a free developmental preschool program. Call 265-1074 for applications and information.

Lyon County

Open burning OK with permit

Central Lyon County Fire Protection District is issuing burn permits for the 2005-06 season. Effective immediately burning may be conducted daily from sunrise to 2 p.m. wind conditions permitting. A burning permit is required for all burning including burning in barrels.

Markleeville artists open studios

Fourteen artists, in or near Markleeville, with studios streamside or surrounded by pastures and forest, will open their doors to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Autumn in Alpine County causes an artistic palette of vibrant hues to be splashed into canyons and across ridges wherever aspens, willows and cottonwoods grow, and the Markleeville artists want to share this spectacular event with others.

Participating artists and artisans are: Sandy Baenen, miniature watercolors; Todd Branscombe, photographs; Jan Brees, metal leaves and rock birds; Jeff Brees, topiaries and metal sculptures; Kathy Caldwell, jewelry; Peter Chope, watercolors; Susan Flakus, metal sculptures; Gina Gigli, etchings and masks; Kaye Jobst, beads and baskets; Ellen Martin, quilts and dolls; Charles Muench, oil paintings, Carolyn and Mark Vaughn, raku pottery; and Jennifer Vaughn, photography.

Maps guiding visitors to the artists' home studios will be presented to registrants at the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in Markleeville each day of the free studio tour.
