We are ticked off ... "armchair" or "Monday morning" quarterbacks are a dime a dozen, and their opinions are about worth that much. If they were valuable, those giving them would be on the field coaching.
So said, we think the crap they're giving CHS football coach, Shane Quilling, is just that ... crap. Coach Quilling, to those who know and work with him, teaches, builds self esteem, respects his players, is ethical and a gentleman. Just read the letter from this year's team captains (Nv. Ap., 10-7, p. B7) or Dave Price or Darrell Moody's columns, too. There was a coach, not too long ago, who called individuals on his team, "not worth s--t ... pieces of crap ... worthless, etc." We are well rid of him. As for letting every kid play all the time ... better go back to T-ball or Pee-Wee football. You can be sure when a kid gets to medical school or goes out for pro ball, they take the best ... and not everyone gets "in." Is it fair? Yeah, just like life ... not everyone gets to play ... not everyone gets to the top of Mount Everest. So, we guess it's time for that old adage ... "Winner's never quit ... quitter's never win."
And if you are a parent who doesn't understand this, and supports mediocrity, then whine away ... let your child quit and whine with you. As for coaching high school students (in any sport), you can tell them one thing, then in the heat of play, they do something else and lose a down ... then all you can do is go on and try and get through to them the next time. We think the parents and administration should stand up and support our coaches and teams, not complain and put them down ... seems coaching and umpiring can be thankless professions. Just ask the Douglas County volleyball coaches ... they quit last week because of "parental involvement." Sure, we all want our kids to play all the time, make every team ... but it ain't gonna happen ... if a kid can't swim, he won't be on the swimming team ... too bad some of you don't get that. So, once again, we urge you to support our CHS football team on Friday night at their 7 p.m. homecoming game against South Tahoe ... the team, Coach Quilling and his coaches, need your SUPPORT, not your complaining. Thanks for being there for them ...

Egads ... "The Curious Savage" opens on Friday, Nov. 4, not on the 5th (as "some people" reported last week) ... call 883-1976 for reservations for this delightful comedy ... also, don't miss the last weekend for "High Dive" (with Karen Chandler) and "21A" (with Jason Macy) at the Community Center (887-0438 for info), or "The Last Five Years" (with Andie Anderson and Josh Jessup) at the BAC's Performance Hall (883-1976) ... both shows show off our great local talent. And in the BAC's Don Reynold's theater, Gerry Orton's class of "Improv Kids" will be making you laugh at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday night ... the kids are so fresh and innovative ... and your sides will split laughing ... lots to do this weekend ...

A note to the city of Carson ... two words ... DUCK PONDS ... cain't no one do anything about them? The ducks want to know. And the sidewalks into town on East Fifth Street just west of the Frost-Yasmer apartments are deplorable. People in wheelchairs have a hard time navigating the weeds and telephone poles in the middle of the narrow sidewalks. It would be nice if they had an easier way into town. Also (and this is not in the city's purview), the "C" on C Hill is hardly to be "C-een." It would be nice if a CHS class took this on or a boy took it on as an Eagle Scout project, or Sen. Mark Amodei would love doing it ... again. Next to the flag, it looks grungy ... that's our opinion, anyway (and, no, we're not going to do it ... we're too far "over the hill" for that kind of work ... "C" below) ...

In keeping with that, Eloise Koenig sent us the following: "I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for over an hour, but, by the time I got my exercise clothes on, the class was over." We hurt to think about it ...

Andy Harvey sent us some good 'uns ... "During his welcome message aboard a Delta flight, the captain said, 'Delta Airlines is pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry ... unfortunately, none of them are on this flight.' And from a stewardess, 'Your seat cushions can be used as flotation devices. In the event of an emergency water landing, please paddle to shore and take them with you, with our compliments.'"

Wouldn't you just love it if the charities you give to didn't sell your names to every other charity? That way you wouldn't get 80 million return address stickers or lebenty-leben calendars or zillions of whatever, along with letters asking for money. Think of the money they could have if they would use the money on the charity, instead of on the "stuff" they send to us ... just wondering ...

And to end on a cheery note ... Ken Fraser sent us a question posed by Craig (age 9) ... "What would you do on a first date that was turning sour?" "I'd run home and play dead. Then I'd call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns." Now you know ...
