Laurie Trotter didn't always know she wanted to be a lawyer. But when she finally figured it out, the Southern California native charged ahead and made it happen.
Last week, Trotter became Carson City's newest deputy district attorney for the criminal division, filling a spot left vacant by Kristin Luis, who took a position with the Nevada Commission on Ethics in September.
A graduate of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., Trotter said when she watched her husband, Owen Devereux, go through the process of enrolling, she decided she'd give it shot.
Devereux, a Connecticut native and former U.S. Marine Corps major, now works as a staff attorney at the Nevada Supreme Court.
Before taking the position with the District Attorney's Office, Trotter spent 18 months working civil cases for the Reno law firm of Georgeson, Thompson & Angaran.
She also worked a year for Justice Miriam Shearing and spent time with the federal government in Washington, D.C.
Although the couple could have chosen anywhere to live, Trotter said they decided on this area because of its beauty.
And "I love the sun," she said.
The office, headed by District Attorney Noel Waters, has 11 deputy district attorneys to handle criminal prosecutions, enforcement of child support and all legal matters affecting Carson City government.
"This is a great place to practice law. I'm eager to get started," she said.
