Students at St. Teresa of Avila School participated in the school's pumpkin-decorating contest recently. There were three age categories, and top winners received coupons for ice cream at Baskin Robbins.

"This is the first year we tried doing it," said Student Council Coordinator Cathy Smith, who teaches kindergarten and religion to fifth-graders. "Student council had decided this would be a fun activity."

There were more than 70 entries.

Kindergarten- through second-grade winners were: first place to Johnny Cavilia, first grade, for "Bubble Gum Baseball Player"; second place to Olivia Miller, first grade, for "Cinderella Coach"; and third place to Carena Doyle, second grade, for "Mr. Redican" (the school principal).

Third- through fifth-grade winners were: first place to Sarah White, fifth grade, for "Pinhead"; second place to Luke Doyle, fourth grade, for "Baseball Player"; and third place a tie between Shannon Flaherty, fifth grade, for "Kitty" and Maria Kremasta, fifth grade, for "Candy Corn Face."

Sixth through eighth-grade winners were: first place to Kailey Taylor, sixth grade, for "Kitty"; second place to Rebecca Doyle, sixth grade, for "Cinderella Coach"; and third place to Kristen Torvinene, sixth grade, for "Vote for Pedro."
