Caroline and Tom Grayson entered the Larry Ruvo Stateroom on the grounds of the Governor's Mansion on Saturday morning as the sun broke the horizon and a rainbow ushered them in from the drizzle.

They came for the pancakes, the chance to help send a child to college and to see part of the area where their son works as a state trooper assigned to guard Gov. Kenny Guinn.

The couple was among the more than 300 people to set their alarms early to enjoy the Republican Women's pancake breakfast. The event featured ham, eggs, Starbucks coffee and of course, the pancakes.

It was the first thing on the Graysons' list of things to do on Nevada Day, an itinerary that included the parade and whatever else struck their fancy.

They are happy to be back in Carson City to celebrate Nevada Day, finishing their move back from Texas earlier this month.

"We lived here in the 1970s and decided to retire here. We just love it. It's a small town that hasn't grown much," said Caroline Grayson.

The proceeds from the pancake feed are used to provide two $1,000 scholarships to local high school students, one from Carson High and one from Dayton High. All of the food and supplies for the event are donated and the breakfast is served by politicians and political candidates, including Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong and Assemblywoman Sharron Angle.

Back in the kitchen, John Vettel worked to make the more than 750 pancakes needed to feed the hungry crowd.

"I like to hang out with the people here and Nevada Day is a good time to get together and it's a good way to spend the day," said Vettel.
