After nearly four years of standing vacant, the former Super K-Mart store in north Carson City has been sold.

The 170,000-square-foot big box, vacant since early 2003, was listed with CB Richard Ellis in late 2005, said Aiman Noursoultanova, a vice president with the brokerage who last week represented the seller, Wilmington Trust Company, in its sale.

The buyer is keeping a low profile due to leases pending on the space. However, Carson City officials plan to extend its downtown redevelopment area to include the site that the big box anchors, 250,000-square-foot NorthTown Plaza, says Supervisor Robin Williams.

The building opened as a Kmart store in 1994.

The new owner plans to re-develop the big box. It would have sold in the first two months had it been a simple sale, says Noursoultanova. But the complicated financial structure of the building scared off many would be buyers.
