International Game Technology said last week it's begun a significant test of a casino system that it expects to be the wave of the future.
The Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino in San Diego went "live" just before Christmas with the first installation of an IGT server-based gaming system and machines.
"This is the first step in a long process of submittals, development and live testing, in jurisdictions throughout the world, which we hope will lead to widespread acceptance and use of this new technology," said Steve Morro, president of IGT's Gaming Group.
Executives of Reno-based IGT have said server-based applications will allow casinos operational advantages such the ability to download game themes and machine configurations from one central computer, which will simplify the process that today is handled manually on each machine on a given casino floor.
Lee Skelley, assistant general manager of casino operations at the Barona Valley Ranch Resort & Casino, said the system ultimately may allow the casino to customize slots for the preferences of individual players.
