Entries in the annual Silver Spike Awards competition of the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America are due by Oct. 6. The awards dinner will follow in November.

"We try to keep the focus tight, to maintain it as a prestigious award," says Mary Paoli, president of the Sierra Nevada Chapter and public relations specialist at R&R Partners. From among last year's 37 entries emerged four Silver Spike awards, four individual awards, and one Judges' Choice award.

People enter publicity campaigns, Paoli says, for reasons ranging from benchmarking their work against others in the market to the creation of sales tools for agencies.

The Silver Spike Awards dinner will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sierra Nevada Chapter. With a current membership of 75, the chapter has remained true to its goal of fostering professional development and never evolved into a sales opportunity group, says founding member Karen Swobe, managing director at R&R Partners.
