Movies and television increasingly use digital technology to create and store images, and Reno-based Bright Systems is riding that wave.

The company, which designs and manufactures post-production editing software and data-storage solutions for media production, is boosting its employment in northern Nevada.

Last year, says Ryan Marsh, marketing coordinator, Bright Systems stepped far beyond its primary California customer base to sell worldwide.

And it moved beyond the film industry to service broadcast television networks.

To handle the growth, Bright Systems hired nine additional employees at its Longley Lane location, bringing the total to 26. The global expansion created a need for field engineers, says Marsh.

"There's tons of opportunities," he says. But the company also faces plenty of competition from giant computer software companies entering the field.

Bright Systems hopes to stay a step ahead with its software that allows multiple users to work simultaneously on an editing project.

And, this spring it debuted a new product at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas a transportable hard drive that lets editors move the post-production project around to various locations.

The ongoing challenge, says Marsh, is technical. Users want speed, and that's limited by the current state of technology.

The privately-owned company was founded in 1999 by Anthony Harris, its chief executive officer, and Homer Carter, its chief technology officer.
