As the northern Nevada home construction market remains slow, Centex Homes is moving some of its staff from Reno to Sacramento and is laying off some workers here.

The Dallas-based company didn't disclose the number of workers who will be affected by the change, although a spokesman described the number of workers who will lose their jobs as small.

Centex said leadership and back-office jobs including legal, accounting and land-development positions will be among those moving to northern California.

Eric Bruner, director of public relations for Centex, said construction services, sales, design and warranty-support teams will continue to be based in Reno as Centex works through its current supply of land for development.

He said Centex expects to build about 200 homes in northern Nevada during the company's fiscal year that runs through next March. That compares with delivery of about 400 homes during the previous fiscal year.

"Reno will continue to be an important market for Centex Homes," Bruner said. "We will continue to build out our existing land holdings in the Reno vicinity."

Centex currently is marketing six single-family and townhome projects in Sparks, Reno and Carson City.
