Graphics group boosts design savvy

What's in a look? Lots, says Derek Vogel, co-founder of AIGA, a networking group for artists, architects, and anyone interested in design. The American Institute of Graphic Arts includes all design disciplines, from interior to industrial.

To find charter members, it culled from area groups that cater to advertising and marketing interests. While programming will interest the design community, says Vogel, all events are open to everyone, regardless of creative background.

"One of our primary objectives in founding this chapter is to elevate the role of design to the business community and public at large," says Vogel. "We feel that one way to do that is to include the public in our activities."

Upcoming events will be movie nights at the museum showcasing design related films, sponsored "shop talks" with companies such as Apple and Adobe, notable speakers in the design profession, and field trips.

AIGA Reno Chapter kick-off meeting is 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Nevada Museum of Art. Program includes Andy Warhol exhibit viewing. Guest speaker and product designer Laurian Pokroy Dixon presents: "Targeting design: from sketch to shelves." Information and cost is online at info@renotahoe.aiga.org.
