Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. recently reached an agreement with PPG Industries' aerospace business division to develop a chromate-free aircraft primer.

The Reno-based company also finalized an agreement with AES Corporation to jointly develop a suite of energy storage solutions to improve performance of the electrical grid.

PPG and Altairnano will develop nanometal oxide dispersion technology under a three-year research agreement. The development will combine Altairnano 's technology with PPG 's resin to create a primer to replace chromate-based coatings, says Paul Bowman, PPG Aerospace global business platform manager for coatings.

Earlier this year, global power company AES completed a $3 million strategic investment in Altairnano, which will develop energy storage solutions capable of delivering in excess of 1MW of power and 500 KWh of energy to strategic points within the electrical grid to more efficiently deal with congestion, peak energy consumption, and fluctuations in demand.

Altairnano is expected to delivery prototype energy storage products to AES by the end of the year. "This agreement demonstrates the performance of Altairnano 's technology to improve the operation of the electrical grid" says Altairnano president and CEO, Alan J. Gotcher, PhD.
