The expected July opening of a 12,000-square-foot Goodwill store at a former skating rink in Carson City marks another retail addition in northern Nevada by the non-for-profit organization.

Goodwill signed a lease brokered by Brad Elgin of Stark and Associates and will revamp the storefront at 3520 Highway 50 East, about one mile east of Highway 395.

Chief Executive Officer Rob Harden hopes to start processing donated materials by June.

The company's donation drop-off center at Eagle Station in Carson City gives Goodwill about half of the volume needed to supply the new store. "With the new opening we will be in an excellent position to contribute back to the community," Harden said.

Goodwill will share the location with an ACDelco auto parts store, which is moving from the front side of the building to the back. Harden expects to hire 35-40 employees.

Goodwill had been in Reno for about two years when it leased 16,000 square feet at Silverada Plaza, 2424 Oddie Blvd. That store, which employs 84 people, is expanding to 25,000 square feet in June to handle growing sales.

Goodwill also has recently opened donation centers in Reno at 10855 Double R and at California and 1145 California. In June Goodwill will open another donation site in Sharon Square at Robb Drive and Interstate 80.
