S&W Feeds buys for expansion

Stan and Wendy Kolbus, owners of S&W Feeds in Carson City, started their business 14 years ago in an 800-square-foot space.

The Kolbus' soon moved to a one-acre site on South Curry Street, and last week they completed the purchase of a 2.64-acre parcel at 2292 S. Carson Street and will move their operations to an unoccupied 7,000-square-foot building on the site.

In addition to building an 8,000-square-foot warehouse and hay barn, the couple invested more than $500,000 to remodel the building, which formerly housed Artichoke Joes Poker Palace. S&W currently occupies 2,300 square feet of retail space at 2310 S. Curry Street.

Stan Kolbus plans to open the doors to the new store today.

"The nice thing is that we are going to be on (Highway) 395 instead of back there on Curry Street," he says.

Kolbus says with the additional retail space he will bring on more clothing lines, as well as expand his lines of horse trailers and small-scale 20-90 horsepower tractors for small-time farmers. Kolbus says sales of tractors and trailers have helped drive business, but feed sales still account for more than 65 percent of his overall revenues.

"We are just a small-time family-owned operation," he says.

The Kolbus' paid $2.2 million for the property in a deal brokered by Larry Messina and Jason Bacigalupi of Coldwell Banker Commercial Partners, and Bob Fredlund with Coldwell Banker Best Sellers.
