Arete Power Inc., a Reno-based developer and manufacturer of flywheel energy-storage systems, said last week it filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Beacon Power Corp. of Massachusetts.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for northern California.

Publicly-traded Beacon, in a prepared release, said it will vigorously defend its patented flywheel energy storage technology, Smart Energy Matrix.

Last month, Arete offered its patent for sale. The asking price was not disclosed.

Chris Gabrys, chief executive officer of Arete and founder of Reno's Mariah Power, which makes a wind powered renewable energy system, said he plans to turn his attention to Mariah.

Gabrys declined to comment on the suit, and Beacon Power did not return phone calls for comment.
