A group of retired executives who provide free counseling to business owners is beginning to plan a workshop to help businesses owners learn how to survive the recession.

The Service Corps of Retired Executives, better known as SCORE, hopes to enlist other educational and nonprofit groups that assist small businesses to create the workshop that is likely to be scheduled in early February.

"We think we have an opportunity to provide information that can help," said Dick Stumbo, who is spearheading the planning for SCORE. "Nobody has been through anything like this before."

He said the workshop probably will include sessions on financing, cash-flow management, expense reduction and human resources management over one or two days.

The organizers also hope to provide an overview of the assistance that is available to small businesses as they weather the economic storm.

SCORE will target owners of existing businesses. The group wants to provide the workshop without cost to participants.

Stumbo said organizers tentatively expect to draw about 100 participants to the event.

A location hasn't been determined, and the size of the available room will be the key factor in determining the number of participants.

SCORE works in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide free and counseling business advice. More than 40 retired executives work with the program in northern Nevada.
