The first year was a learning experience for executives in charge of the Fallon Octane Fest, which drew smaller-than-expected crowds and didn't cover its $150,000 in costs.
"This year, with a model based not on spectator revenue but being participant-driven, we will develop quite a revenue stream and be in a better position to land in the black," says Rick Gray, executive director of Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority.
A concert by the Marshall Tucker Band was sparsely attended, Gray says, so northern Nevada bands that enjoy a strong local following will be booked in the future. Other changes include creation of a jamboree for off-road enthusiasts who will pay a participation fee at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.
