United Construction Company has patched and repaired concrete floors for the 30 years the company has been doing business.
However, United recently launched a company exclusively dedicated to work at industrial buildings with broken concrete flooring throughout the Truckee Meadows. United Concrete Specialties has performed about 30 jobs since the company was incorporated in March.
"Some of the older buildings have been here 20, 30 years or more, and the constant use of forklifts causes the floor to unravel," says Craig Willcut, United's president and chief executive officer. "There are not very many companies that do this as a stand-alone business. There are companies that do this as a sideline, so we decided to make it a focus to provide the service to those
buildings that need it."
Willcut heads the new operation, and Patrick Cappiello works as field supervisor over three permanent full-time employees. Cappiello also oversees and prices the work.
"We don't see it as a huge company," Willcut says. "We don't see it even growing as far as personnel. We just saw a need for the service. It will probably do no more than $500,000 a year."
Typically the most wear on concrete pads is found at saw-cut expansion joints, which allow the concrete to shrink or expand depending on the weather. United Concrete Specialties cuts out sections of shattered concrete and fills them in with an epoxy.
The company also works on new buildings, scrubbing and sealing floors and caulking saw-cut expansion joints to reduce future deterioration.
"It is just tedious work," Willcut says. "There is not a lot of money in it, but it's something that needs to be done."
