Summit at UNR to examine

A top researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and an attorney with wide experience in the banking industry will keynote a conference at the University of Nevada, Reno, College of Business next week.

The summit on causes of the nation's financial crisis and the steps taken by regulators and market participants will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Joe Crowley Student Union at UNR.

Among the speakers will be Fred Furlong, the group vice president who oversees financial research and applied microeconomic research at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

Furlong, who also served as an economist for the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C., will detail policy responses to the financial crisis.

Alan Rabkin, who represents the Nevada Bank Association as outside counsel, will discuss long-term implications of the financial crisis for the banking industry and the regional economy.

Rabkin has more than 30 years banking experience and is a former senior in-house counsel for banks including Bank of America, Bank of the West, and Valley Bank of Nevada. He is of counsel to the law firm Jones Vargas.

Also on the agenda is a discussion of the causes of the financial crisis, the links between the U.S. economy and the rest of the world and a review of current conditions.

Panelists will include Thomas Cargill, Mark Pingle and Federico Guerrero of the economics faculty in the College of Business. The panel will be moderated by Elliott Parker, a professor of economics at UNR.

Registration of $149 or $1,500 for a table of eight includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
