The Nevada Commission on Tourism will have a new director before the end of the year,

Tim Maland, former director of the tourism agency, left the position on Oct. 1, citing a desire to work in his family's investment and insurance business. Maland was hired in January of 2007.

Chris Chrystal, media relations manager for the agency, says the new director will be chosen through an open application process. Applicants' names will be submitted to the tourism commission during the 25th annual Governor's Conference on Tourism Dec. 8-9 at the Peppermill Resort and Spa. The commission then will interview candidates and submit the top three names to Gov. Jim Gibbons, who will select the new director.

Despite operating without a director, Chrystal says it's business as usual at the NCOT.

"Because of Tim's considerable organizational skills we are able to function without him," she says. "Tim reorganized the agency very well while he was here. We have five senior managers, and each of us is responsible for our own department, people and the things we accomplish.

"We all run our separate departments, and everyone has their marching orders."
