The U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural development program has scheduled two free workshops to help nonprofits, local governments and Indian tribes secure grants to assist small businesses.

Grants may be used for work such as marketing studies and business plans for small and emerging businesses, purchases or leases of machinery and equipment, or construction of a building.

The grants are available in most areas outside of Carson City, Reno and Las Vegas. The grants aren't made directly to small businesses, but instead are channeled through nonprofits, government agencies or tribes.

The grant writing workshops are scheduled in Dayton from 9-11 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Lyon County offices, 34 Lakes Blvd., and in Elko from 3-5 p.m. Jan. 27 in Health Science Room 108 at Great Basin College.
