Northern Nevada Business Weekly: Tell us a little about Systems of Nevada.
Joe Bemus: Systems of Nevada is a low-voltage contractor specializing in the sales and custom installation of security, central vacuums, audio/video, intercoms, camera systems as well as other low-voltage products. This year we are introducing ChannelBrite, a permanent outdoor LED lighting system that remains on your home year-round so you are decorated for every occasion with the press of a button.
NNBW: What role do you play in the company?
Bemus: I direct the day-to-day operations and oversee our sales team.
NNBW: What kind of boss are you?
Bemus: I am tough but fair. My team knows what I expect and they work hard. I'll always take care of the employees who is our committed to our clients and to Systems of Nevada as a whole.
NNBW: How did you get into this business?
Bemus: I was working at Sears and decided I wanted a job that was more flexible for raising children. With that, I decided to make my own schedule by being my own boss and started my company. That was 20 years ago.
NNBW: What do you enjoy about it?
Bemus: I enjoy just about every aspect of my job. But most of all, I enjoy my employees and clients.
NNBW: What do you find annoying about it?
Bemus: I would have to say collecting money that is owed to Systems of Nevada, Inc. is the most frustrating.
NNBW: What have you learned in the past 20 years that's helping you weather the current economy?
Bemus: The current economy is tough ... however, the key to survival is exceeding your clients expectations, and doing an outstanding, honest job for them.
NNBW: How do you keep yourself recharged after 20 years in the same business?
Bemus: I stay charged because there is always something new going on in our business. Also, the lives of my employees are constantly evolving and growing. I enjoy that.
NNBW: How do you spend your time away from the office? Why are these activities important to you?
Bemus: Away from the office I enjoy spending time at my cabin in northern California. While there, I love to fish, visit with friends and go on Jeep rides. Most important for me though is spending time with my family.
NNBW: If you could have a "do over" on some aspect of your career, what would you do differently the next time around?
Bemus: I feel great about what I've done and how Systems of Nevada has grown. I love what I do and
looking back I wouldn't change anything.
NNBW: What's the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Bemus: The best thing you can do is be honest and always do what you say you're going to do. I follow that advice in every aspect of my life.
NNBW: Any final thoughts?
Bemus: Systems of Nevada turns 20 years old this year and I am so grateful to this community for their support. We will continue to do our best to exceed the expectations of our customers.
