Coming off the busiest year in its history, an entrepreneurial training program overseen by the Nevada Small Business Development Center will offer summer classes for the first time.
NxLeveL for Entrepreneurs, the 13-week program that's the cornerstone of educational offerings by the small business development center, will run June 9 through Sept. 1 at the Redfield Campus in southwest Reno.
Kathy Carrico, training director for the Nevada Small Business Development Center, said the summer session was scheduled in response to requests from the business community.
For some entrepreneurs, parenting responsibilities are less during the summer, allowing them more time to focus on development of business skills, she said. The summer session also allows more time for entrepreneurs who are planning to launch a business in the autumn or winter to put their skills to work.
"Timing is always important for our attendees," Carrico said. " We're here to help, so we're prepared when they are ready."
Marie Gibson-Archer is the instructor for the evening sessions, which run three hours each. Guest speakers include attorneys, bankers and successful entrepreneurs.
Carrico said the agency typically sees rising enrollments when the economy goes south, and the trend is holding true today.
More than 350 people statewide attended NxLeveL training in 2008, setting an annual record.
"Many find themselves overwhelmed once they start a business and need immediate assistance," Carrico said. "Now is the time, more than ever, for business owners to work on their businesses."
Cost of NxLeveL is $395 a person, and pre-registration is required through www.nsbdc.org. A complete course outline also is available at the Web site.
