Granite Construction will begin work next month on major contract to widen northbound U.S. 395 between Moana Lane and Interstate 80.

More than 100 workers will be employed on the job during peak times.

The company said last week it won a $31.4 million contract from the Nevada Department of Transportation for the work on three miles of U.S. 395. Granite said it expects to complete the contract within thirteen months.

Big pieces of the work include widening five bridges, reconstruction of five interchanges and construction of seven major retaining walls totaling more than 4,000 feet along the highway, said Rod Cooper, branch manager of Granite's Nevada operations.

The project also includes reconstruction of ramps from the freeway to Mill Street and Glendale Avenue. Lighting and landscaping work also is included.

The state requires that Granite keep three lanes of through traffic open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with major lane closures scheduled overnight and on weekends.

State officials have said the project is a priority because of congestion on the highway's northbound lanes during rush hours.
