A Reno nonprofit has launched a silk-screening production company in a bid to provide young workers with vocational skills and job experience.
The Children's Cabinet, a family resource center that works to keep children safe and families together, is financing the startup of the business with a $174,138 grant it received through Nevadaworks.
The money covers purchase of a silk-screening press, exposure table, washout booth, chemicals and ink. Some of the grant also will be used to pay the youths who will be employed.
The business named Cabinet Ink will produced silk-screen T-shirts featuring custom designed by its staff as well as designs ordered by businesses and individuals.
Taylor Morgan, manager of Cabinet Ink, said youth participants are enthused about the chance to build a business.
"We wanted to create a type of cottage industry and teach the ins and outs of running a business to at-risk youth and give them a marketable skill and a valuable trade they can use for a lifetime," Morgan said. "The youth are able to see their accomplishments and hard work materialize, giving them hope for the future."
All the proceeds of the venture will assist the youth participants
Cabinet Ink, which will operate as a division of The Children's Cabinet, is located at 777 Sinclair St. Its phone number is 352-8090, extension 127.
